Information about a Vasectomy
-
A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure, for the purposes of permanent male contraception, when a man decides that he does not wish to have any more children. It can be performed safely and comfortably under local anaesthetic in a GP clinic setting, with few risks or long term side effects. It is the most effective form of contraception.
The procedure involves numbing the skin of the scrotum, initially with a local anaesthetic patch, which is then supplemented by a small injection of further local anaesthetic. Once the skin is numb, a small, single hole at the front of the scrotum, approximately 4mm across is stretched open, allowing access to the 2 Vas Deferens tubes which carry sperm from the testicles to the genital tract in the pelvis. These tubes are then divided and sealed, preventing sperm from leaving. There is no effect on sexual function, and no negative health effects on the man. The risks are few and rare and will be discussed in detail with you during your consultation. A small dressing is applied at the end of the procedure and the patient will be encouraged to rest for a few days.

The procedure is safe and effective for most men, though confirmation that it is the right option will take place at an initial consultation on a prior occasion. Usually men feel minimal discomfort during the procedure itself, but may be a little achy and uncomfortable for anything between a couple of days and a week. However, most men are able to return to work with light duties after 3 days but should avoid straining or heavy exercise for at least a week.

Following the vasectomy, it is important to keep using an alternative form of contraception until a successful outcome has been confirmed, as there is a small chance that the procedure doesn’t work first time (approximately 1 in 500) and that an unplanned pregnancy may still be possible. Success is confirmed with a semen test approximately 3 months after the procedure, and it is extremely important that this is done before stopping other contraception.

The initial consultation costs $100 though eligible patients will receive a Medicare rebate of $42.85 ($57.15 out of pocket cost).
The procedure costs $650 and eligible patients will receive a Medicare rebate of $222.65 ($427.35 out of pocket cost).
Post procedure semen tests may incur a further charge payable directly to the pathology provider performing the test.
(Note that if a patient has reached their Extended Medicare Safety Net for the calendar year, the out of pocket costs will be significantly lower.)
