How long does it take to work?

Approximately 12 weeks after the vasectomy, you will be given a referral to provide a semen sample for analysis at a pathology provider. The results will be reviewed by the doctor, who will then contact you to inform you of the results. Ideally you should abstain from ejaculation for 3-4 days before your test and the sample should not be refrigerated.

Occasionally, some residual sperm remain in the semen at this time, and you may require a second test a few weeks later.

YOU MUST ENSURE THAT YOU USE ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF CONTRACEPTION UNTIL THE DOCTOR HAS INFORMED YOU THAT YOUR SAMPLE IS CLEAR.

Ideally, you should deliver your sample fresh, within 1 hour to one of Douglas Hanly Moir's main laboratories eg Mater Hospital, Crows Nest or Giffnock Avenue, Macquarie Park (click here for laboratory details).

If this is not possible, you can provide the fresh sample to a collection centre, ideally shortly before their courier collection times

eg 9:00am, 12:30pm and 2:30pm at Douglas Hanly Moir Pathology Lvl 3, Dee Why Grand Comm. Tower, 834 Pittwater Road, Dee Why 2099
